How To Change The Oil In Your Car

If you know how to change your car’s oil, it will keep you from having to take your vehicle to the mechanic each time the oil needs changing. Changing the oil in your car is a pretty simple process, but many people have never had to carry out the task, so whether you’ve changed your car’s oil before or if it’s going to be the first time it’s good to have a guide to follow for how to do it.

Regular oil changes are vital to the health of the engine of your car, and carrying out the process will help your engine last a long time. The good news is that the process is pretty simple and only requires a few different tools. Let’s take a look at the process of how it’s done.

Type Of Oil

The first step is making sure you use the correct type of oil for your car. Using the wrong kind of oil can cause significant damage to the engine of your vehicle. The best way to check the type of oil you need is to check the owner’s manual; the manual will tell you exactly the type of oil that is suitable for your car. The owners manual will also be able to tell you the amount of oil that your car requires

Run The Engine

You’ll want to run the engine for 5 minutes; this will warm your engine up, which helps to make the oil a bit less viscous. This makes it easier to drain the oil. Once you’ve run the engine then let it cool down for 5-10 minutes to allow the temperature to decrease, this helps to reduce the chances of any oil burns from occurring.

Draining the OilDraining motor oil

To make draining the oil easier, you’ll want to raise your car using a jack. Then you can start draining the oil, the first step to doing this is to remove the drain plug. This is a large nut located under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine, place a container under the oil drain plug. Unscrew the oil drain plug and allow all the oil to empty.

Unscrew the Oil Filter

Unscrew the oil filter making sure that you don’t spill any oil in the process, once the filter is removed then wrap it in newspaper and set it aside. Once the filter has been removed then you can clean the filter compartment using an old rag or cloth. You can then follow the instructions on the new filter to make sure it fits into the filter compartment and make sure any excess oil is wiped up.

Add The New Engine Oil

Use a funnel to help fill your engine with the new oil. Make sure you’ve double-checked that you’re using the correct oil and you know how much oil you need to fill the engine with. Once you added the oil, you can screw the oil cap on tightly making sure it’s secure.

Once you’ve changed the oil you can run the engine to make sure everything is working properly; you’ll want to make a note of the oil change in the logbook of your car to keep all the records up to date.
